In the shadow of one of the world’s largest online retailers, Burien, WA stands out with its thriving small businesses like Howard and Marge BoutiqueLucite Jungle, and Paper Delights. These specialty shops, along with many others, help to draw visitors and define Burien’s community identity by offering distinctive products, creating local jobs, and driving economic growth within the area.

When it comes to meaningful, unique gifts, big-box stores and online giants can’t replicate the character and warmth of Burien’s local businesses. Howard and Marge Boutique, Lucite Jungle, and Paper Delights aren’t simply retail spaces; they’re places where connections flourish, and every item tells a story. Shopping locally in Burien is about experiencing a welcoming community, where you feel heard and seen. Here’s why each of these shops is a true Burien gem and why shopping local makes all the difference.

Howard and Marge Boutique: A Legacy Rooted in Community Growth

Since 2008, Howard and Marge Boutique has brought a distinct blend of fashion and personal touch to Burien. Named after the owner's grandparents, this boutique specializes in men's and women's clothing with a selection that appeals to multiple generations. Beyond style, the boutique's presence has economic significance, bringing steady foot traffic to Burien's retail area and fostering partnerships with local organizations like Discover Burien.

"I chose Burien because of its community feel, and that's where my heart is," shares owner Robin Dunkle. "Being here means more than sales—it's about sustaining a close-knit network where people know each other's names. When someone shops here, they're investing back into Burien's future, ensuring we can all thrive together."

From weekend shopping spikes to holiday rushes, Howard and Marge Boutique attracts residents and visitors, stimulating revenue across Burien's local economy. The boutique's goal to expand its men's section in the coming years signals growth for the business itself and a deepening of its roots in the community, enhancing Burien's reputation as a thriving shopping destination.

“After being open for 16 years, and moving locations to Burien, I feel like my business is probably doing the best it ever has,” said Dunkle. “It’s so nice to be right here in town and be part of the community. My spot is so great because the town square is not too far away, and then there’s a couple of condo complexes, and so people in town do a lot of walking which gives my shop a lot of visibility.”

Lucite Jungle: Sustainability Meets Community-Building

Opened in early September, Lucite Jungle brings Burien a fresh, eco-conscious retail experience. Lucite Jungle goes beyond transactions by educating the community on sustainable shopping and fostering human connections by selling a mix of new, vintage, and upcycled items. For cities like Burien, where sustainability and environmental responsibility are growing priorities, businesses like Lucite Jungle align perfectly with community values and contribute to Burien's distinctive character.

"We're not just selling items; we're sharing ideas and connections that make people feel at home here," explains owner Kindle Shaw. "My business is a place where people come to find unique pieces and to interact with others who care about the same things—community and sustainability. This isn't something you get at a big retailer, and it's what makes Burien a special place to live and work."

Burien Economic Development’s support and the increased traffic have helped Lucite Jungle build its brand and introduce sustainability-focused products to Burien residents. By shopping here, locals are reinforcing Burien's identity as a forward-thinking, eco-friendly city, ultimately attracting like-minded visitors and potential residents.

“When younger generations come into my shop, they’re over the moon with excitement—it’s almost like they’re walking on Mars,” said Kindle. “What used to be everyday items for some of us feels like a brand-new discovery to them. There’s a need for more shops like mine, where people can actually see, touch, and be inspired by things before they buy them.”

Paper Delights: Keeping Commerce Close to Home

Since moving from Wallingford to Burien in 2018, Paper Delights has benefited from the supportive community, enabling it to thrive even through the challenges of the pandemic. Known for its beautifully curated stationery and custom gift items, the shop has become a cornerstone for personal, thoughtful gifts that are harder to find in larger stores. With each purchase, locals and visitors are contributing to the economic stability of Burien and ensuring that these personalized services continue to be part of the city's retail landscape.

"Our business success is truly tied to the support of this community," says Paper Delights owner Alicia Olsen. "People here know that when they shop at Paper Delights, their money supports Burien directly rather than going to a giant corporation. We're proud to be part of a city that values community-first commerce."

Paper Delights has big plans for the future, including opening new locations while keeping its roots firmly in Burien. This type of success secures jobs and demonstrates Burien's potential to incubate thriving small businesses that can expand while still maintaining local roots.

"My mom and I started our shop in 2008 with a vision of creating something meaningful for our family. Moving to Burien was the best decision—we found a supportive community, and our business truly thrived here. The pandemic helped us refocus on what we love: designing unique, locally inspired products and creating a beautiful, inviting space. Burien feels like home, and we’re grateful to be part of it."
