Sitka Living opened in 2019 in Burien after owner Lori Glynn spent 17 years working in retail in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood. She and her business partner, Rebecca Zielinski, wanted a store that kept operations simple and centered on direct relationships with customers and local artists. Lori said, "I knew I wanted to have a business in a neighborhood where people support small businesses. Burien felt like the right place from the start."

The store focuses on furniture, lighting, and local art. The approach prioritizes consistency, reliable and local sourcing, and community connection. Lori noted that Burien reinforced that decision early. “People here show up. They check in and see how you’re doing, they want to buy local, and they tell their friends about us. That level of support makes a huge difference in retail.”

Shared Space Brings Retail Stability

Sitka Living operates in a shared space with Glass Expressions. Sitka Livings manages the front of the store while Glass Expressions manages the studio and custom work in the back. Lori described the arrangement as practical and collaborative. "We help each other every day," she said. "If I am with a customer, their team steps in to help out when needed without hesitation. It creates a smoother experience for everyone."

This shared model reduces operational costs, increases coverage, and brings in a broader customer base. It also builds a dependable business environment that benefits both owners.

Prioritizing Local Artists and Select National Lines

Sitka Living sources work from local artists and carries established furniture and home lines. The store works with creators on consignment, offering them consistent visibility. Lori said, "Supporting local artists matters to me. Many of them do not have another place to sell their work, and I am glad to help support local creatives."

The store also carries thoughtfully crafted Row Furniture, modern and elegant Four Hands decor, distinctive LH Imports, and hand knotted Jaipur Rugs. The combination supports a steady supply of inventory that meets a wide range of customer needs.

Retail Operations Respond to Seasonal Trends

Sitka Living experiences the strongest demand during the fourth quarter, or the holiday season. Summer events, festivals, and WIne Walks organized by Discover Burien also bring in more visitors. The store also offers design consultations that help customers plan furniture placement or update a room.

The increase in the cost of doing business has created some challenges. Lori said, "Retail feels a little unpredictable right now, but we focus on the customers who walk in the door. We adjust, we stay patient, and we keep moving."

Reports show that for every $100 spent at a locally owned business, a whopping $73 remains in that community. Compare that to the $43 that remains when purchasing from a corporate chain.

When multiplied over and over, that $30 difference has a massive impact. Each of those dollars supports Burien's small businesses and the community by increasing tax revenue and raising the standard of living for the Burien community.

Community Engagement Remains a Core Benefit

Lori highlighted the role Burien residents play in sustaining the business. "The community has carried us through the hardest periods. During the pandemic, they made a point of stopping by or picking up small items. That support kept us going."

As a single mother of 16-year-old twins, Lori also values the flexibility and encouragement she receives from customers and neighboring businesses. She added, “People understand the balance I juggle. They give me room to run the store and take care of my kids, which is one of the best perks of being a business owner in Burien.”
