In 2020, The Muslim American Youth Foundation (MAYF) permanently moved to Burien, and has since supported its existing community in dynamic ways. Serving the broader Seattle/Washington State Area for over 8 years, MAYF is a non-profit organization that primarily provides opportunities and resources to Muslim youth.
Executive Director and Resident Scholar Dr. Yahya Suufi states that the organization is centered on providing a centralized safe place for Muslim youth. “Our organization is run by a team of dedicated members who are passionate about creating a safe and inclusive environment for young people to connect with their faith, culture, and community. We believe that it is important for Muslim youth to have a place where they can be themselves and where their unique experiences and perspectives are valued.”
Methods of Support at MAYF; Creating Community in a Time of Need
At MAYF, services are tailored to meet the unique needs of Muslim Youth within the community. Dr. Yahya Suufi explains, “Our mentoring program pairs young people with experienced mentors who can provide guidance and support as they navigate through life's challenges. We also offer athletic, tutoring, and leadership development programs, all of which are designed to help young people build confidence, develop new skills, and make meaningful connections with others.”
In addition to these services, Dr. Sufi details that the organization offers much more. “At MAYF, we understand that building a strong community requires more than just offering programs and services. That's why we also host events and activities that promote community building and cultural awareness. Our events are open to everyone, regardless of their background, and are designed to celebrate diversity and foster understanding between different cultures.”
While MAYF primarily serves Muslim Youth, the organization provides support for the broader community in several capacities. At MAYF, programs and assistance are open to all, regardless of whether someone is a member of the Muslim community or not. For example, the center assists families and businesses with navigating complex resources like the Washington State Department of Commerce Business Innovation Fund and the Working Families Tax Credit. Additionally, MAYF recently hosted a Bazaar that spotlighted women-owned businesses in the area. Through events and assistance that are fully open to the public, MAYF helps support individuals, families, and businesses.
Finding a Home for MAYF; Burien was a Natural Choice
While the organization serves the broader Seattle Metropolitan region, Burien is the heartbeat of MAYF. Dr. Yahya Suufi reflects, “We are proud to be a part of the Burien community, and we believe that our organization plays an important role in creating a more inclusive and welcoming community for all. One of our primary missions is to create safe spaces for community members. Burien is a melting pot of cultures, and many of our members reside in this area, making it a natural choice for our center.”
Burien is a community that prides itself on being inclusive and culturally vibrant. With organizations like MAYF providing support throughout the city, residents of all backgrounds can expect to feel safe and welcomed. To learn more about Burien’s community, click here.
